The importance of VITAMIN D 
The fat-soluble vitamin D occupies a special position among the vitamins because it can be formed in humans through exposure to sunlight (UVB light!). Vitamin D regulates the calcium and phosphate metabolism and thus promotes the mineralization and hardening of the bones and is also involved in many other metabolic processes in the body (such as muscle metabolism, defense against infections). Vitamin D comes in two forms, collectively known as calciferols. A distinction is made between plant vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and animal vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). However, both vitamin forms are equally effective (equieffective).

Research results from the last few years have now shown the connection between vitamin D supply and the function of the immune system and provide indications of a role for vitamin D in many essential metabolic processes to ensure normal immune defence. Especially in winter, the body's own vitamin D synthesis comes to an almost complete standstill. Vitamin D deficiency is a real problem in Europe, because 50-70% of the population has low vitamin D blood levels, even if they live in very sunny areas, since UVB radiation in the northern hemisphere from October to March is humiliated.

Reference values ​​for VITAMIN D
Vitamin D wird in mcg (Mikrogramm) oder in internationalen Einheiten (IE) angegeben. 1 mcg entspricht 40 IE bzw. 1 IE = 0,025 mcg. Die bisherigen Referenzwerte (D-A-CH-Werte) für die Nährstoffzufuhr sehen eine tägliche Vitamin D Zufuhr bis zu 50 mcg (entspricht 2.000 I.E.) als unbedenklich an. Die bestehenden Empfehlungen, die derzeit in Überarbeitung sind, liegen bei Säuglingen mit 400 I.E., Kinder und Erwachsene bis 65 Jahre mit 200 I.E., und über 65 Jahre mit 400 I.E. Der Trend geht allerdings eindeutig in Richtung höhere Vitamin D Aufnahmeempfehlungen. US-amerikanische Studien sehen für Erwachsene und Senioren eine empfohlene Einnahme von 1.500 bis 2.000 I.E. Vitamin D pro Tag vor. Die DGE (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ernährung e.V.) gibt als neuen Referenzwert 20 mcg Vitamin D pro Tag an (das sind 800 I.E.).1)
