Emla works by temporarily numbing the surface of the skin. It is applied to the skin before certain medical procedures. This helps to eliminate pain on the skin. An application time longer than 30 minutes may lead to an increased occurrence of local vascular reactions (see also section 4 \"What side effects are possible?\").\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\u003cspan dir=\"auto\"\u003eIf you are taking specific medications for heart rhythm disorders (class III antiarrhythmics, such as amiodarone), your doctor will monitor your heart function.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan dir=\"auto\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDue to potentially increased absorption through freshly shaved skin, it is important to adhere to the recommended dosage, area of application, and duration of exposure. Avoid getting Emla in your eyes, as this can cause irritation. If Emla accidentally gets into your eye, rinse it thoroughly immediately with lukewarm water or saline (sodium chloride) solution. Be careful not to get anything else in your eye until sensation returns. Emla should not be used on a damaged eardrum. If you are using Emla before vaccinations with live vaccines (e.g., tuberculosis vaccinations), you should see your doctor or healthcare professional again within the specified timeframe to check the vaccination result.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eChildren and adolescents:\u003cbr\u003eIn infants\/newborns younger than 3 months, a temporary, clinically insignificant increase in the concentration of the hemoglobin in the blood (methemoglobinemia) is frequently observed for up to 12 hours after application of Emla. The efficacy of Emla for heel prick blood sampling or for ensuring adequate analgesia during circumcision has not been confirmed in clinical trials. Due to insufficient data on drug absorption, Emla should not be used on the genital skin (e.g., penis) or genital mucosa (e.g., in the vagina) of children under 12 years of age. Emla should not be used in children younger than 12 months who are also being treated with other medications that affect the blood concentration of the hemoglobin pigment methemoglobin (methemoglobinemia) (e.g., sulfonamides; see also section 2, \"Using Emla with other medicines\"). Emla should not be used in premature infants.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eUsing Emla with other medicines:\u003cbr\u003eTell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription and herbal medicines. The reason for this is that Emla can affect the way other medicines work, and other medicines can affect Emla. Occasional use of Emla during pregnancy is unlikely to have any adverse effects on the unborn child. The active ingredients in Emla (lidocaine and prilocaine) pass into breast milk. However, the amount is so small that there is generally no risk to the child. Animal studies have not shown any impairment of male or female fertility.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDriving and using machines:\u003cbr\u003eEmla has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines when used at the recommended doses.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eEmla contains macrogolglycerol hydroxystearate (Ph. Eur.):\u003cbr\u003eMacrogolglycerol hydroxystearate (Ph. Eur.) may cause skin irritation.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e3. Half a 5g tube contains approximately 2g of Emla. The protective membrane at the tube opening can be pierced using the cap.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFor application to the skin before minor procedures (such as needle pricks or minor skin surgeries):\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\u003cspan dir=\"auto\"\u003eApply a thick layer of cream to the skin. Follow the instructions in the package leaflet or those of your healthcare professional. In certain cases, a healthcare professional must apply the cream.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\u003cspan dir=\"auto\"\u003eThe cream is then covered with a plaster (plastic film). This is removed shortly before the procedure begins. If you are applying the cream yourself, make sure that your doctor, pharmacist, or healthcare professional has provided you with plasters.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\u003cspan dir=\"auto\"\u003eThe usual dose for adults and adolescents over 12 years of age is 2 g.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\u003cspan dir=\"auto\"\u003eFor adults and adolescents over 12 years of age, the cream should be applied at least 60 minutes before the procedure (unless the cream is being used in the genital area). Half a 5g tube contains approximately 2g of Emla. One gram of Emla cream squeezed from the tube is about 3.5cm long.
