COLDAN nasal spray is a medicine for the local treatment of colds, hay fever, pharyngitis, to support the treatment of inflammation of the frontal and maxillary sinuses and to facilitate rhinoscopy (examination of the inside of the nose).
After using COLDAN, the inflamed nasal mucosa swells. At the same time, COLDAN inhibits the formation of new nasal secretions. The effect of COLDAN begins after a few minutes and lasts up to 4 hours.
If you don't feel better or feel worse after 3 days, contact your doctor.

Contraindications

COLDAN nasal spray must not be used

  • if you are allergic to naphazoline or any of the other ingredients of this medicine listed in section 6;
  • in the case of inflammation and loss of the nasal mucosa, which is accompanied by dryness, crust formation and ulceration (rhinitis sicca);
  • if you suffer from glaucoma (angle-closure glaucoma);
  • after surgery on the pituitary gland or after surgical procedures carried out through the nose or mouth;
  • if you are also taking MAO inhibitors (medicines for depression) or have taken them within the last two weeks;
  • in children under 2 years of age (see also section 3).

Interactions

  • Because of the risk of a blood pressure crisis, COLDAN nasal spray must not be used at the same time as certain medicines for the treatment of depression (MAO inhibitors) or should not be used at the same time as other certain medicines for the treatment of depression (tri- and tetracyclic antidepressants) (see “COLDAN nasal spray may not be applied”).
  • Narcotics (anaesthetics), medicines to dilate the pupils (atropine sulfate), medicines to lower blood pressure (propanolol) or insulin (medication for diabetes) can, together with COLDAN nasal spray, increase the effect on the heart and circulation.
  • Any depressant effect on the central nervous system that may occur can be increased by alcohol, sleeping pills, tranquilizers (drugs that have an anti-anxiety and relaxing effect), and neuroleptics (drugs used to treat mental illnesses).
  • The simultaneous use of theophylline (drug used to treat asthma) and its derivatives in high doses increases the side effects listed under point 4.
  • COLDAN combined with guanethidine and reserpine (medicines used in blood pressure therapy) can lead to an increase in blood pressure.
  • An increase in the effect occurs when medications for Parkinson's disease (trihexyphenidyl) and medications that support circulation (adrenaline and norepinephrine) are taken at the same time.
  • A reduction in effectiveness occurs when taking some medications for gout or rheumatism/pain, anti-epileptic drugs (phenytoin), substances that reduce the clotting of the blood (anticoagulants), sleeping pills (barbiturates), medicines for fungal infections (griseofulvin), corticosteroids, antibiotics ( p-aminosalicylic acid) or anesthetics (halogenated hydrocarbons).
  • Interactions can occur if you take medicines for high blood pressure (alpha and beta receptor blockers) at the same time.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before using this medicine.

COLDAN nasal spray should not be used during pregnancy. It should not be used during breastfeeding as it is not known whether the active ingredient passes into breast milk.

COLDAN nasal spray contains benzalkonium chloride.
Benzalkonium chloride can cause irritation to the skin/mucous membranes.

Dosage
Adults and adolescents aged 12 and over: 1 spray in each nostril 2 - maximum 4 times a day.

Children from 6 to 12 years receive 1 spray in each nostril 1 - maximum 3 times daily. The use of COLDAN nasal spray is not recommended for children aged 2 to 6 years. . If use is necessary, COLDAN nasal spray may only be given to children aged 2 to 6 years if prescribed by a doctor.

Method of administration
For nasal use. To spray into the nose.

  • With your head in an upright position, insert the spray head into each nostril and activate the spray pump.
  • Optimum distribution of the spray mist is achieved by gently inhaling through the nose after spraying.
  • Only release the pressure from the spray attachment after removing the spray head from the nose.
  • For hygiene reasons and to avoid the transmission of pathogens, a spray bottle should only be used by one and the same person.

Duration of application
There should be an interval of at least 4 hours between individual applications. Treatment with COLDAN nasal spray should not be continued for longer than 7 days in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and over, and no longer than 5 days in children aged 6 - 12 years. If symptoms worsen or persist for more than 72 hours without noticeable improvement, please seek medical attention.
A break of at least 10 days must be taken before further treatment. COLDAN nasal spray must not be used for ongoing treatment. Long-term, uninterrupted use may cause habituation symptoms.
