Cold sores
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1, Herpes labialis, cold sores) is very common in children and adults (60-80%).
The primary infection occurs mainly in childhood, manifesting as ulcerative gingivostomatitis, which causes great difficulty in eating and drinking due to extensive and very painful lesions on the oral mucosa and gums. Ulcerative pharyngitis (inflammation of the pharynx) is more common in adults.
The Herpes virus produces a latent infection in the nervous system that persists throughout life and may recur.
A number of factors can trigger the reactivation and migration of the virus: UV radiation (sunbathing, solarium, skiing), physical and emotional stress, febrile illness (influenza infection), menstruation, immunosuppression, dental treatment.
Initially, the skin tingles, burns and itches before the characteristic painful blisters (cold sores) develop on the oral mucosa and lips, most often in groups.
Antivirals are usually used to treat cold sores. But the treatment is not without side effects, which is why alternative substances that do not develop resistance and are well tolerated are being sought.
One such active ingredient is tea tree oil.
Tea tree oil
Studies (1,2,3,4) show that tea tree oil and some of the individual components of this essential oil have an antiviral effect. For HSV-1 the 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) was 0.0009%. Viral infection with HSV-1 was reduced by more than 96%. These studies have shown that the traditional use of tea tree oil for cold sores is justified.
Use: Apply TeboLip several times a day after the first signs of cold sores or damage to the corners of the mouth
