Vitamin D – the vital “sun vitamin”

In contrast to the other vitamins, vitamin D can be produced by the human body itself. It is formed by the skin under the influence of sunlight (UV-B radiation). From October to April and especially in the dark winter months, however, the sun's power is not sufficient for this. Even in summer, the sun is not strong enough after 5 p.m. for sufficient vitamin D to be formed in the skin. In addition, many people have little time and opportunity to stay in the sun for a sufficiently long time because of their job. And: With increasing age, the ability of the skin to form vitamin D decreases significantly.

Although vitamin D can also be ingested through food, most foods only contain it in very small amounts. Scientists now assume that more than 60% of Germans are not sufficiently supplied with vitamin D. Nutrition experts therefore recommend a daily intake of 
20 µg (equivalent to 800 IU) of vitamin D. This is particularly easy to do with a vitamin D supplement that only needs to be taken once a week.
