What Is DeflaGyn — and Could It Help After an Abnormal Smear?
Getting a letter about an abnormal cervical smear result can feel alarming. For many women, it triggers weeks of uncertainty while waiting for a follow-up appointment. If your doctor has mentioned DeflaGyn, or you've come across it in your research, here's a clear and honest guide to what it is, how it works, and what to expect.
First, a word of reassurance
An abnormal smear does not mean you have cancer. In most cases, it means that some cells on the cervix look slightly unusual — often due to a common virus called HPV (human papillomavirus). Many of these changes resolve on their own, without any treatment at all. But the waiting period can feel stressful, and that's where DeflaGyn may play a role.
What is DeflaGyn?
DeflaGyn is a vaginal gel designed to support the natural resolution of abnormal cervical cell changes. It is a Class IIa medical device — not a medication — that has CE marking and is used in a number of European countries as part of the "watchful waiting" period between an abnormal smear and a follow-up colposcopy or biopsy.
Its main ingredients are:
- Micronised silicon dioxide (SiO₂) — tiny silica particles that bind to and help remove pathogens (including bacteria, viruses, and cell debris) from the surface of the cervix
- DEFLAMIN® — a patented antioxidant blend of biologically activated selenium (sodium selenite) and citric acid, which helps protect healthy cells and supports a balanced vaginal environment
Together, these ingredients work to cleanse the cervical environment, reduce oxidative stress, and help the body do what it naturally tries to do: clear the abnormality on its own.
Who is it for?
DeflaGyn is used by women who have received unclear or abnormal results from a cervical smear, including findings such as:
- ASC-US (atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance)
- LSIL or HSIL (low or high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion)
- CIN 1 or CIN 2 (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grades 1 and 2)
- HPV-positive results
- Cervical erosion
It is used during the observation period — the weeks or months between an initial abnormal result and a follow-up examination — to actively support remission rather than simply waiting passively.
Does it work?
A prospective randomised clinical trial published in the Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics (Major et al., 2021) studied 216 women with histologically confirmed CIN 1 or CIN 2. After three months of using DeflaGyn, 72% of women in the treatment group saw their lesions regress, compared to just 25% in the control group who received no treatment. The rate of high-risk HPV infections also fell significantly in the DeflaGyn group.
These are encouraging results, though it's worth noting that this remains the primary large randomised trial, and your doctor is best placed to discuss whether DeflaGyn is appropriate for your specific situation.
How is it used?
DeflaGyn comes as a gel in a 150 ml bottle with reusable applicators, providing approximately 28 days of therapy. The recommended course is 3 months (3 × 28 days), with a short 3-day break between each cycle.
Each evening, 5 ml of gel is applied deep into the vagina using the included applicator. The gel works overnight and is naturally expelled from the body.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Shake the bottle well before use
- The expelled gel may have a slightly reddish tint — this is normal and will wash out of underwear
- A panty liner can be used for comfort
- Avoid other intravaginal products (such as contraceptive rings) for at least 2 hours after application
- Always consult your doctor before use, particularly during pregnancy
Is it safe?
In the clinical trials, no significant side effects were reported. A small number of women may experience mild local irritation (such as itching or a brief burning sensation). It should not be used if you have a known sensitivity to any of its ingredients.
The bottom line
Receiving an abnormal cervical smear result is unsettling, but you're not without options during the waiting period. DeflaGyn offers a way to take an active role in supporting your own cervical health while your body works through the natural process of recovery. It's gentle, non-hormonal, and backed by clinical data.
As always, the most important step is to stay in close contact with your gynaecologist and attend all recommended follow-up appointments. DeflaGyn is a supportive tool — and one that many women find gives them a sense of agency during an otherwise uncertain time.
