Cavities Keep Coming Back? Your Enamel Might Need More Than Daily Toothpaste
Brushing twice a day with regular toothpaste is the baseline — but if you keep getting cavities, have sensitive teeth, or your dentist has mentioned "weak enamel," daily toothpaste alone may not be doing enough.
This is where a high-fluoride weekly treatment gel like Elmex Gelée comes in.
Why Some Teeth Need Extra Fluoride Support
Tooth enamel is constantly going through small cycles of demineralization (acid attacks from food, sugar, and bacteria) and remineralization (repair, mostly from fluoride and saliva). For most people, regular toothpaste provides enough fluoride to tip that balance in favor of repair.
But for people who are more prone to decay — due to deep grooves in their teeth, orthodontic appliances, dry mouth, or a history of frequent cavities — that balance can tip the wrong way. That's where a concentrated, less-frequent fluoride treatment becomes useful.
How Elmex Gelée Works
Elmex Gelée is a high-concentration fluoride gel built around amine fluoride (olaflurum and dectaflurum) combined with sodium fluoride — delivering 12.5 mg of fluoride per gram of gel.
It works in two ways:
- Remineralizes enamel that has been weakened or decalcified, helping to firm it back up
- Slows bacterial activity in dental plaque, which reduces the conditions that lead to new cavities forming
Amine fluoride in particular binds to the tooth surface and oral mucosa more effectively than standard inorganic fluoride, which is part of why this type of gel is used as a once-weekly treatment rather than a daily toothpaste replacement.
How to Use It
- Squeeze out about 1 cm of gel
- Brush thoroughly for 1–2 minutes, once a week
- Spit out the excess gel afterward — don't rinse immediately
That's it. It's designed to sit alongside your normal toothpaste routine, not replace it.
Who Should Be Careful
- Not for children under 6 — there's a real risk of swallowing, and fluoride intake needs to stay within safe limits for younger kids
- Children should never swallow the gel, regardless of age
- If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, only use Elmex Gelée if your doctor has specifically recommended it
If your dentist has flagged ongoing decay or sensitivity, this kind of weekly fluoride treatment is worth bringing up at your next visit.
