Pet Skin Fungus, Ringworm, or Hoof Rot? Why Biological Control Works Differently
Fungal skin infections in animals — whether it's ringworm on a dog or cat, yeast overgrowth on a horse's coat, or hoof rot in livestock — are notoriously stubborn. They can recur after treatment, spread between animals, and resist standard antifungal products if the underlying skin microbiome isn't also addressed.
ECOSIN Smart Mushroom takes a different approach: instead of a chemical antifungal, it uses a biological one — a naturally occurring microorganism called Pythium oligandrum that actively hunts and destroys fungal pathogens on the skin.
What Is Pythium Oligandrum?
Pythium oligandrum is a naturally occurring mycoparasite — an organism that parasitises other fungi. It feeds on and destroys fibrous micromycetes (filamentous fungi, including dermatophytes that cause ringworm) and yeast organisms directly on the surface of skin, hair, claws, hooves, and other dermal structures.
What makes it particularly useful is that it's selective: it targets pathogenic fungi while supporting rather than disrupting the normal, healthy microbial flora of the skin. This is in contrast to many chemical antifungal treatments, which can strip the skin of beneficial microorganisms alongside the harmful ones — sometimes contributing to reinfection or secondary imbalances.
ECOSIN is suitable for use in domestic pets, horses, and livestock, and addresses a wide range of fungal skin issues:
- Skin and coat fungal infections (dermatophytosis / ringworm)
- Yeast overgrowth on skin or fur
- Infections affecting claws and hooves
- Hoof rot in horses
- General support for physiological microbial balance of fur and sensitive skin
How to Use ECOSIN
The product comes as effervescent tablets — each dissolved in water to create a treatment bath or spray solution. There are two application protocols depending on the area being treated.
For coat and skin (full body or affected skin areas):
Dissolve one tablet in 2 litres of lukewarm water (approx. 34°C) and leave to activate for 20–30 minutes. Bathe the animal in the solution or apply it thoroughly with a sprayer, making sure it reaches the skin beneath the coat. Do not towel dry — allow the skin and fur to air dry naturally so the active ingredient remains in contact with the surface. Repeat after one week. Continue for three consecutive weeks in total.
For lower limbs and hooves:
Dissolve one tablet in 2 litres of lukewarm water (approx. 34°C), leave for 20–30 minutes, then pour into a disinfectant bath or apply with a sprayer. The entire affected area — hoof or hoof included — must be fully submerged or thoroughly soaked. Allow to air dry. Repeat daily for one week, then continue weekly applications for a full month.
Important: Once mixed with water, use the solution within 24 hours.
Composition
Each effervescent tablet contains: citric acid, sodium bicarbonate, sorbitol, silica, Panicum miliaceum (millet), fossilised Pythium oligandrum, PEG 150, and sodium carbonate.
The effervescent base (citric acid + sodium bicarbonate) helps disperse the active ingredient evenly through the water when the tablet dissolves. The Pythium oligandrum itself is in fossilised (stabilised) form, which allows it to be stored in dry tablet format and reactivated when dissolved.
A Note on Expectations
ECOSIN is a biological treatment that works over time and through repeated application — it's not a single-dose chemical antifungal. The full protocol (three weekly applications for skin/coat, or daily then weekly for limbs) is designed to progressively reduce the fungal load while supporting the skin's natural balance. Skipping applications or stopping early reduces effectiveness.
If a fungal infection in an animal is severe, spreading rapidly, or not responding to treatment, a veterinary assessment is worthwhile to confirm the diagnosis and rule out secondary bacterial involvement.
