The active ingredients in Canesten Bifonazol comp. – Ointment + nail set are bifonazole and urea.
Bifonazole is a broad-spectrum antimycotic used to treat fungal diseases (mycoses) of the skin.

The effect on skin fungus is to kill fungi and inhibit the growth of yeast.

Urea is a substance also found in the human body. With the special preparation in Canesten Bifonazol comp. - Ointment + nail set, the infected nail keratin is softened by urea. This leads to bloodless and painless removal of the fungal nails.

Canesten Bifonazol comp. - Ointment + nail set is used for the nail-stripping treatment of fungal infections of the nails on the hands and feet with a simultaneous anti-fungal (anti-fungal) effect. 

Contraindications

Canesten Bifonazol comp. - Ointment + nail set must not be used if you are allergic to bifonazole, urea or any of the other ingredients of this medicine listed in section 6.

Interactions

The release of other active ingredients from topical preparations and penetration into the skin can be enhanced by urea.

If bifonazole is used together with anticoagulant therapy (warfarin), your doctor will monitor you accordingly.

Pregnancy, breast-feeding and fertility
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.

Pregnancy
Since the safety of use during pregnancy has not been proven, Canesten Bifonazol comp. – Ointment + nail set should only be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding after consulting a doctor. The use of Canesten Bifonazol comp. – Ointment + nail set should be avoided during the first 3 months of pregnancy.

Breastfeeding
During treatment with Canesten Bifonazol comp. – Ointment + nail set You should not breastfeed.

Fertility/Childbearing
No studies have been conducted on the effects of bifonazole on fertility, but animal studies have shown no adverse effects of the drug.

Canesten Bifonazol comp. – Ointment + nail set contains wool wax.
Wool wax can cause localized skin irritation (e.g. contact dermatitis).

Application

Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or exactly as discussed with your doctor or pharmacist. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, apply as much ointment from the tube to the diseased nails once a day until the entire nail surface is thinly covered.

Method of application
After the ointment has been applied to the diseased nails, the fingers or Toenails are glued with the enclosed plaster and remain in the plaster bandage for 24 hours.
The plaster bandage should be changed daily. With each daily dressing change, the fingers or toes (or hand or foot) are bathed in warm water for about 10 minutes.
The softened, diseased nail substance is then scraped off with the included scraper.
Finally, the treated nails are dried, the ointment is applied again - as described above - and the nails are glued again with the plaster bandage.

Side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. 

Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders
Not known: Contact dermatitis, skin maceration (softening of the skin), scaling, nail disorders, nail discoloration, redness, skin irritation, itching, rash, application site pain, limb pain.

These side effects are reversible and disappear after treatment is stopped.

1 g contains 0.01 g bifonazole and 0.4 g urea.

The other ingredients are: wool wax, bleached wax and petroleum jelly.
