Canesten Cream is a medicine for the treatment of fungal diseases (mycoses) of the skin and mucous membranes. Due to the broad spectrum of action of clotrimazole, the cream is effective against many different pathogens that can cause fungal skin infections in humans. Through local application, yeast fungi (causing infections of the labia, adjacent areas and inflammation of the glans and foreskin in men) and the types of fungi that occur in foot and nail fungal diseases are inhibited or killed in their growth. The cream not only works on the surface of the skin, it also penetrates into the deeper layers of the skin.

Canesten Clotrimazole Cream is used for fungal infections of the feet, usually in the space between the toes, the soles of the feet and the nails, as well as for infections of the labia and adjacent areas caused by yeast fungi (Candida vulvitis); Inflammation of the glans and foreskin in men, caused by yeast fungi (Candida balanitis). Itchy blisters, redness, flaking and swelling are usually clear indications of a fungal infection.

Contraindications

Canesten Clotrimazole Cream must not be used if you are allergic to clotrimazole or any of the other ingredients of Canesten Cream listed in section 6. 

Interactions

Canesten Clotrimazole should not be used together with other medicines against fungal infections (e.g. amphotericin, nystatin).

Pregnancy, breast-feeding and fertility
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.

Pregnancy
There is no indication that use during pregnancy is expected to have harmful effects on mother and child. As a precautionary measure, clotrimazole must not be used in the first 3 months of pregnancy or when used in the vagina.

Breast-feeding
You should not breast-feed during treatment with Canesten.

Fertility/Childbearing
No studies have been conducted on the effects of clotrimazole on fertility, but animal studies have shown no harmful effects of the drug.

Important information about certain other ingredients of Canesten Clotrimazole cream
Canesten contains cetostearyl alcohol. This can cause local skin reactions (e.g. contact dermatitis).

Application

Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or exactly as discussed with your doctor or pharmacist. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the usual dose is:
To ensure complete healing, treatment should be continued according to the instructions below, even if the symptoms have disappeared.

Foot and nail fungal diseases:
The cream is applied thinly to the affected skin areas 2 - 3 times a day and rubbed in. Due to its intensive effectiveness, a small amount of cream is usually sufficient for an area about the size of a palm.
Before each use of the cream, you should wash the affected skin areas so that the loose skin flakes are removed. Then dry the skin thoroughly, because fungi love moisture.
In the case of athlete's foot, despite rapid improvement, treatment should be continued for around 3-4 weeks until all signs of the disease have disappeared. The treatment time is at least 4 weeks.

Infections of the labia (Candida vulvitis), inflammation of the glans and foreskin in men (Candida balanitis):
For infections of the labia and adjacent areas of women, apply the cream 1 - 3 times a day to the relevant skin areas (external genitals up to the anus ) on. The cream is also recommended for the simultaneous treatment of inflammation of the glans and foreskin in men to prevent reinfection.
The general treatment period is 1 - 2 weeks.
In order to achieve lasting success of the treatment, the treatment should not be stopped after the acute symptoms have subsided.

See a doctor if symptoms have not improved within 4 weeks of starting treatment.

Children and Adolescents
Data on a limited number of newborns, infants, toddlers, children and adolescents show no evidence of adverse effects with the use of Canesten clotrimazole cream.

Side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.
If you notice any side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist. This also applies to side effects that are not listed in this leaflet.

The following side effects are possible; their frequency cannot be estimated based on the available data:

Immune system disorders:
General allergic reactions such as brief fainting (syncope), drop in blood pressure (hypotension), shortness of breath (dyspnea), hives (urticaria)

Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders:
Blisters, mild pain, edema, erythema, irritation, skin peeling, itching (pruritus), rash, stinging/burning

composition

The active ingredient is clotrimazole. 1 g of cream contains 0.01 g of clotrimazole.

The other ingredients are cetostearyl alcohol, benzyl alcohol, sorbitan monostearate, polysorbate 60, cetyl palmitate, octyldodecanol, purified water.
