Colecalciferol (vitamin D3) occupies a special position among the vitamins because the human body can produce it itself in the keratinocytes through exposure to UV light from 7-dehydrocholesterol (provitamin D3). Subsequently, the first hydroxylation to 25-OH-C colecalciferol occurs in the liver (via CYP450 systems) and the second hydroxylation to 1,25-di-OH-cholecalciferol (calictriol), the actual active form, occurs in the kidneys.

According to the DGE, the requirement for children (from 1 year) and adults is 800 IU.
A long-term intake of 50 IU / kg body weight / day is recommended and unproblematic (large therapeutic range).
Especially from October to March there is little endogenous synthesis; therefore the supply from "outside" is necessary.
