Buscopan 10 mg 6 suppositories

Buscopan 10 mg suppositories have an antispasmodic effect on the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract.

Buscopan 10 mg suppositories are used for mild to moderate spasms, mainly in the gastrointestinal tract.

If you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 3 days, contact your doctor.

Contraindications

Buscopan should not be used

• if you are allergic to hyoscine-N-butyl bromide or bromides or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
• if you suffer from a certain type of muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis);
• if you have been diagnosed with an organically caused narrowing of the gastrointestinal tract;
• if you have been diagnosed with a debilitating (paralytic) or mechanical bowel obstruction (ileus);
• if you have an abnormal enlargement of the colon. 

interactions

Ask your doctor for advice before using Buscopan 10 mg suppositories if you are also taking any of the following medicines, as the effects of these medicines may be increased by Buscopan 10 mg suppositories:

• antihistamines (against allergic diseases);
• medicines containing amantadine (for Parkinson's disease);
• Medicines containing quinidine or disopyramide (against cardiac arrhythmia);
• tri- and tetracyclic antidepressants (for depression);
• other anticholinergic drugs (e.g. tiotropium, ipratropium for breathing difficulties or atropine-like drugs);
• antipsychotics (against psychosis);
• β-sympathomimetics (against breathing difficulties).

You should also ask your doctor for advice if you are taking medicines to correct bowel motility (e.g. medicines containing metoclopramide) at the same time as Buscopan 10 mg suppository, as this may reduce the effect of both medicines.

pregnancy and breast feeding period

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

There are no adequate data on the use in pregnant women and on the transfer of the active substance into breast milk. Therefore, as a precaution, the use of Buscopan 10 mg suppositories should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. 

application

Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist 4 if you are not sure. The recommended dose for adults, adolescents and children over 6 years of age is:

Use 1 suppository as needed. You can use 1 suppository several times a day, the maximum daily dose should not exceed 6 suppositories.

Children over the age of 6 and adolescents should only use Buscopan 10 mg suppositories after consulting a doctor.

For rectal use.

The suppositories are removed from the casing and inserted into the rectum with the pointed end first.

Children under 6 years of age
Buscopan 10 mg suppositories are not recommended for use in children under 6 years of age due to the high content of the active substance.

Duration of use
Buscopan 10 mg suppositories should not be used for longer than 3 days without medical advice. 

side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

The following side effects have been observed in studies with Buscopan:

Uncommon (may affect up to 1 in 100 people):

• accelerated heartbeat
• Skin reactions (e.g. hives, itching)
• dry mouth
• Disturbance of the activity of the sweat glands

Rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people):

• urinary retention

Not known (cannot be estimated from the available data)*:

• shortness of breath; Hypersensitivity reactions that may be associated with disorders or failure of the cardiovascular system (anaphylactic reactions, anaphylactic shock); Rash, reddening of the skin, hypersensitivity reactions

*An exact frequency estimation is not possible because these side effects were not observed in the clinical studies. The frequency is probably no higher than 'uncommon', but may be lower.

The active substance is hyoscine N-butyl bromide. 1 suppository contains 10 mg hyoscine-N-butyl bromide.
