Fenistil 30 Dragees
The active substance in Fenistil 1 mg dragees, dimetindene maleate, is a so-called "antihistamine". Fenistil 1 mg dragees are effective against the symptoms of allergic diseases and itching of all kinds.
This medicine is used for:
- Itching caused by: eczema, childhood diseases (e.g. chickenpox), insect stings and bites, food and drug allergies
- hives
- Sneezing and itching in the nose in allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis (hay fever).
- Itching without skin disease
Contraindications
Fenistil 1 mg dragees must not be taken
- if you are allergic to dimetindene maleate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6),2
- from children up to 12 years,
- with simultaneous intake of so-called MAO inhibitors (against depressive moods).
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Fenistil 1 mg coated tablets if you or your child suffer from glaucoma, urinary retention or epilepsy.
interactions
Only take Fenistil 1 mg dragees on the advice of your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
- certain medicines for depression
- certain pain relievers (opioid analgesics, e.g. codeine)
- Anticholinergics such as bronchodilators (medicines used to treat asthma and bronchospasm), gastrointestinal antispasmodics (medicines used to treat abdominal or stomach cramps), mydriatics (medicines that dilate your pupils), urological antimuscarinic drugs (medicines used to treat symptoms of urge incontinence and overactive bladder)
- Drugs with a calming effect or sleeping pills
- medicines for epilepsy
- antihistamines (medicines used to treat cough, cold and allergies)
- antiemetics (medicines used to treat vomiting)
- procarbazine (medicine used to treat certain types of cancer)
- scopolamine (medicine for motion sickness)
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using, have recently taken/used or might take/use any other medicines.
Taking Fenistil 1 mg coated tablets with food, drink and alcohol
The drowsy effect of alcohol can be increased.
Pregnancy, lactation and fertility
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine. Although no teratogenic effects are known, Fenistil should only be taken during pregnancy if expressly prescribed by a doctor. There are no specific studies on its use during pregnancy. It is assumed that small amounts of the active ingredient pass into breast milk. Use during lactation is therefore not recommended.
Ability to drive and use machines
Caution: This medicine can affect your ability to react and drive. Caution is therefore required when operating machines and driving.
application
Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Do not exceed the recommended dose.
Adults and young people aged 12 and over:
Unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor, the usual dose is:
From the age of 12, 1-2 dragees 3 times a day.
For patients prone to tiredness, the recommended dosage is 2 tablets in the evening before bedtime and 1 tablet in the morning with breakfast.
This dosage form is not suitable for children under the age of 12, Fenistil drops are available.
Elderly patients (over 65 years):
The usual adult dosage can be used.
Do not take Fenistil for more than 14 days without consulting a doctor.
Method of application: Take the
dragee whole with a little water.
side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. STOP taking Fenistil Dragees and seek medical attention straight away if you have any of the following symptoms, which may be signs of an allergic reaction:
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat
- severe itching of the skin with a red rash or bumps, muscle spasms
These side effects are very rare (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people).
Other side effects that may occur are usually mild and temporary.
Other common side effects can occur, especially at the beginning of treatment.
Some side effects are very common (may affect more than 1 in 10 people):
- fatigue
Some side effects are common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):
- sleepiness
- nervousness
Some side effects are rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people):
- restlessness
- headache, dizziness
- Stomach upset, nausea, dry mouth or throat.
