What is celiac disease?
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the small intestine . Symptoms of the disease include diarrhea, weight loss, abdominal bloating, malnutrition and skin reactions. This inflammation is caused by gliadin, the protein component of gluten, found in wheat, barley, rye, spelled and many other grains . Recent studies have shown that people affected by celiac disease produce specific antibodies (IgA and IgG classes) against deamidated gliadin peptides (anti-DGP). These antibodies have a high specificity and sensitivity for celiac disease, which allows for a very accurate diagnosis. A positive test result means that the concentration of these antibodies is approximately 20 U/ml (units/ml). Early diagnosis can reduce the progression of intestinal damage and prevent more serious complications.
