Size

For the treatment of dry cough and spasmodic cough with various causes, e.g. colds, flu infections and smoker's cough.

Contraindications

Tussastopp must not be taken,

  • if you are allergic to dextromethorphan or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6),
  • if you suffer from one or more of the following diseases: bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive (caused by narrowing of the airways) airway diseases, pneumonia, breathing disorders (respiratory failure, respiratory depression)
  • during breast-feeding (see “Pregnancy and breast-feeding”)

interactions

If other drugs with a depressant effect on the central nervous system are taken at the same time, such as barbiturates, hydroxyzine and benzodiazepines, the effects may be increased.

A serious, sometimes life-threatening clinical picture (so-called serotonin syndrome) with the following symptoms can occur if patients have been previously treated with or are taking certain mood-enhancing drugs (antidepressants of the MAO inhibitor type or SSRI [fluoxetine, paroxetine]) at the same time: high fever, muscle rigidity, psychological changes such as states of excitement and confusion as well as changes in respiratory and circulatory functions.

With the simultaneous use of drugs that inhibit a certain enzyme system in the liver and thus the breakdown of dextromethorphan - in particular amiodarone, quinidine, flecainide, propafenone (each against cardiac arrhythmia), fluoxetine, paroxetine (both against depression), sertraline, bupropion (both against depressive diseases), haldoperidol, perphenazine, thioridazine (each for certain mental illnesses), methadone (strong painkiller), cinacalcet (for the treatment of parathyroid hyperfunction), cimetidine (for too much stomach acid), terbinafine (for fungal infections) and ritonavir (for HIV infections) - there may be an increase in the concentration of dextromethorphan.
In this context, complaints of overdose have been observed (see "If you take more Tussastopp than you should").

Using Tussastopp at the same time as sedatives such as benzodiazepines or related medicines increases the risk of drowsiness, difficulty breathing (respiratory depression), coma and can be life-threatening. Therefore, concomitant use should only be considered when other treatment options are unsuitable.
If your doctor nevertheless prescribes Tussastopp for you at the same time as sedatives, the dose and duration of the concomitant treatment should be limited by your doctor.
Please tell your doctor about all sedatives you are taking and follow your doctor's dosage recommendations closely. It may be helpful to inform friends or relatives to watch out for the signs and symptoms described above. If you experience such symptoms, consult your doctor.

The combined use of Tussastopp oral solution with secretolytics (expectorant cough medicine) can result in a dangerous build-up of secretions due to the restricted cough reflex.

Pregnancy, breast-feeding and fertility
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.

Pregnancy
Studies and observations on humans have so far revealed no evidence of a teratogenic effect of dextromethorphan.
High doses of dextromethorphan, even when given for a short time, may cause depressed breathing in the newborn.
For this reason, Tussastopp should only be used during pregnancy after a doctor has carefully weighed up the benefits and risks, and only in exceptional cases.

Breast- feeding
Studies on the transfer of dextromethorphan into breast milk are not available. Since a respiratory depressant effect on the infant cannot be ruled out, Tussastopp should not be taken while breastfeeding.

To take the solution, use the enclosed measuring spoon by filling it with solution up to the respective mark.
Rinse the measuring spoon after use.
