Dequonal is a ready-to-use medicine for the disinfection (antiseptic) of the mouth and throat and does not need to be diluted. The undyed, water-clear solution is used in the oral cavity for gargling, rinsing or as a spray. Children and elderly or seriously ill patients who are unable to gargle can be treated with the spray solution.

Dequonal contains dequalinium chloride and benzalkonium chloride as active ingredients. Benzalkonium chloride is not only effective against bacteria and fungi, but also inactivates the so-called "enveloped" viruses (eg herpes virus) found in the mouth and throat. Due to its long-lasting effect, dequalinium chloride increases the effect against bacteria and especially against fungi. By combining the two active ingredients, mixed infections in the mouth and throat area can be treated.

Dequonal is used as a temporary supportive treatment for inflammation and infectious diseases in the mouth and throat, inflammation of the gums (gingivitis), inflammation of the mucous membranes of the mouth (stomatitis) and candida fungal infections (thrush). Dequonal reduces inflammation and helps relieve pain. Dequonal is also used temporarily for bad breath if it is caused by germs in the mouth.

Contraindications

Dequonal must not be used

  • if you are allergic to dequalinium chloride, benzalkonium chloride or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).- Due to the levomenthol content, Dequonal must not be used in infants and small children under the age of 2 years (risk of laryngeal spasms).
  • if you suffer from bronchial asthma or other diseases of the airways that are associated with pronounced hypersensitivity of the airways. Inhaling Dequonal can cause bronchospasm.
  • if there are sores in the oral cavity.

interactions

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using, have recently taken/used or might take/use any other medicines.

The action of Dequonal is inhibited by blood and pus. The presence of common soaps, detergents, materials such as porous materials (rubber, cotton, cork) and plastics (polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene) and materials containing certain fats (eg phospholipids) weaken the effect of Dequonal. Dequonal is not suitable for use with phenol or chlorocresol.

Pregnancy, lactation and fertility

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine. There are insufficient data on the safety of use in pregnant women. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or if you are breast-feeding, you should only use Dequonal after consulting your doctor or pharmacist.

application

Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

Dequonal gargling solution

Gargle 2-4 times a day after meals with about a tablespoonful of Dequonal for about 20-30 seconds or longer in the case of throat infections, rinse for the same length of time in the case of diseases in the oral cavity.

Dequonal solution for spraying

Spray the Dequonal solution into the oral cavity with 3-5 sprays every two hours – more often in severe cases.
You should spray the diseased areas in the oral cavity while holding your breath. To do this, press the spray valve down (pump) 3-5 times as far as it will go!

Dequonal should not be used long-term without medical or dental advice. If the symptoms are accompanied by fever or if the symptoms do not subside significantly after 3 days at the latest, a doctor should be consulted. There could be an inflammation that requires treatment and can have serious consequences for the heart and kidneys.

Application in children

Dequonal should only be used for rinsing or gargling if you have mastered gargling. Therefore, it is not suitable for use in children (Dequonal must not be used in infants and young children under the age of 2 years. See section 2 "Do not use Dequonal").
