Normhydral is used to treat acute diarrhea with and without vomiting in adolescents and adults. Normhydral is a combination of electrolytes and dextrose (glucose) made up according to international recommendations to compensate for the loss of electrolytes and fluids caused by diarrhea and vomiting.
The ready-to-drink solution supplies the organism with the important electrolytes sodium and potassium. Glucose improves sodium absorption, which also increases the necessary water intake. Citrate prevents possible acidification of the blood in diarrhea.

Contraindications

Normhydral should not be taken

  • if you are allergic to glucose or any of the other ingredients of Normhydral
  • with uncontrollable vomiting
  • with severe clouding of consciousness and loss of consciousness
  • in case of shock
  • with excess alkaline substances in the blood
  • with a lack of urination
  • with sugar utilization disorders
  • in severe renal dysfunction

Talk to your doctor before using Normhydral

  • in heart failure
  • with high blood pressure
  • in renal dysfunction

Normhydral is not suitable for diabetics due to the high sugar content.

interactions

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using, have recently taken/used or might take/use any other medicines. Simultaneous treatment with cardiac glycosides (medicines to increase cardiac output) can affect cardiac function. Therefore, consult a doctor before taking Normhydral.

Taking Normhydral with food and drink

Normhydral must not be added to drinks containing sugar, as otherwise the diarrhea can even be intensified again by increased water excretion.

pregnancy and breast feeding period

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine. Normhydral can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding

application

Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. To prepare the drinking solution, please adhere exactly to the specified mixing ratio. The contents of one sachet are dissolved in 500 ml (approx. 4 teacups) of water (boiled if necessary) or cooled, unsweetened tea and drunk. Do not take the powder undiluted.

The prepared solution can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. In the event of vomiting, the cold Normhydral drinking solution is taken at short intervals by the spoonful or sips.

Basically, the treatment is divided into two phases.

Phase 1 (rehydration phase, duration 6 hours): Normalization of the body weight by replacing fluids and electrolytes with the prepared drinking solution, no food intake.

Phase 2 (realimentation phase): intake of usual food and drinking solution.

Phase 1

During this period of 6 hours, up to 50 ml of Normhydral drinking solution per kg of body weight should be taken.

This means the following maximum amounts within 6 hours:

  • 50 kg 5 Btl. in 2500 ml
  • 60 kg 6 Btl. in 3000 ml
  • 70 kg 7 Btl. in 3500 ml
  • 80 kg 8 Btl. in 4000 ml

If the body weight has normalized within these 6 hours, the second treatment phase (food intake) should be started. If the physical condition has not improved after these 6 hours or has even worsened, medical advice should be sought urgently.

Phase 2

In this phase, the intake of usual food should be started. Longer tea breaks and special diets and medicinal foods are not necessary. Please consider that the diarrhea and thus the loss of fluids can still persist during this phase. These fluid losses can still be replaced with Normhydral drinking solution. Overall, the duration of treatment with Normhydral should not exceed 36 hours.

If infants and children require treatment, please consult a doctor, as diarrheal illnesses with or without vomiting in infants and young children can cause life-threatening conditions within a few hours. The prescription-only preparation "Normolyt for children - soluble powder" with the same composition (but with flavorings), but with a smaller sachet content, is available for this purpose. The treatment must be carried out under medical supervision.

If only "Normhydral - soluble powder" is available, up to 50 ml of Normhydral drinking solution per kg of body weight are also used, which means:

  • 5 kg 1/2 Btl. in 250 ml
  • 10 kg 1 Btl. in 500 ml
  • 20 kg 2 Btl. in 1000 ml
  • 30 kg 3 Btl. in 1500 ml
  • 40 kg 4 Btl. in 2000 ml
