Spermidine is a biogenic polyamine found in all living organisms. Spermidine is a natural component of our cells, which our body produces in larger or smaller amounts depending on the metabolic situation.
Humans produce about a third of our spermidine level themselves, the rest is ingested through food.
The body's own spermidine production decreases with age, so that the amount of spermidine to be supplied from outside becomes increasingly important.

The most important metabolic function of spermidine is the activation of autophagy (= autophagy), a cellular process that is of great importance for general cell activity, cell regeneration and the function of our mitochondria and is also triggered by prolonged fasting.
Through autophagy, our body cells break down and utilize their own components. In this way, old, no longer usable and faulty proteins are degraded down to entire cell components and can then be reused to build other new structures.

The process of autophagy is therefore necessary for a balance between the production of new and the breakdown of old cell components and is a strategy developed by our cells in the course of evolution to save energy and thus slow down the natural aging process.

In the immune system, autophagy also enables the intracellular degradation of viruses, bacteria and foreign proteins that have entered the cell. By breaking them down, an immune response is provoked and the formation of antibodies is triggered.
