Properties:
Omega-3 fatty acids are vital, polyunsaturated fatty acids. They cannot be produced by our body itself and must be supplied with food. Omega-3 fatty acid capsules contain standardized amounts of the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
The most important food source of the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids EPA and DHA are cold-water fish (herring, salmon, mackerel).
Omega-3 fatty acids are the starting material for the formation of important tissue hormones, the so-called "eicosanoids". Docosahexaenoic acid contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and vision. Together with eicosapentaenoic acid, it contributes to normal heart function and, as a substitute for saturated fatty acids in the diet, to the maintenance of normal cholesterol levels in the blood.
With an increased intake of unsaturated fatty acids, it is important to adjust the vitamin E intake. Vitamin E contributes to the protection of the cell from oxidative stress.
