The gut is a complex ecosystem in which the intestinal microbiota, the gut barrier, the gut-associated immune system (GALT), and an articulated nervous system work together to make the gut our so-called "second brain."

A quantitatively and qualitatively balanced bacterial flora (eubiosis) is essential for proper intestinal function, as it helps to repel foreign microorganisms, promote digestion and absorption of nutrients, stimulate GALT and contribute to the excretion of potentially harmful metabolites as well as vitamin synthesis. The composition of the bacterial flora can be altered by external stimuli such as stress, changes in eating habits and the use of antibiotics.
