What are omega-3 fatty acids?
The omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid is one of the polyunsaturated fatty acids and is essential. This means that the body cannot build it up itself and must be ingested with food.
Omega-3 fatty acids are found in rapeseed, linseed, soybean or walnut oil and in oily fish (e.g. mackerel, salmon, tuna, herring and local cold-water fish such as char). Omega-3 fatty acids have a positive effect on the risk of increased triglyceride levels,
high blood pressure and coronary heart disease.
Why does the body need DHA (docosahexaenoic acid)?
DHA is an important structural component of cells, especially in brain and nerve tissue, as well as in the retina of the eye. In Europe, the intake of omega-3 fatty acids and especially DHA with daily food is well below the recommendations of the American Heart Association. Adequate intake of
DHA is recommended in all phases of life - already during pregnancy, as well as to maintain a good memory and the ability to concentrate.
Why does the body need EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid)?
EPA is required for many metabolic functions. It is the starting material for the formation of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosanoids, which are required for bodily functions such as the immune system, blood clotting, the regulation of blood pressure and heart rate and many more. It has a positive effect on certain heart diseases (coronary heart disease).
Did you know?
The Inuit have fewer heart attacks
The first indications of an effect of omega-3 fatty acids came from epidemiological studies on Inuit. It has been found that Eskimos are much less likely to die from cardiovascular disease or stroke. It is now known that this is related to the consumption of large quantities of cold-water fish. These fish contain a high concentration of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids enable the blood of these fish to remain fluid even at the lowest temperatures, which is essential for survival.
