Spirulina – an alga with diverse properties
Spirulina is a blue-green algae cultivated in freshwater. Under ideal conditions (e.g. high UV intensity near the equator, nutrient-rich water) the spirulina alga naturally contains a wide range of amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, trace elements and an interesting range of potent antioxidants. Spirulina could be described as a small multivitamin unit - even if the amounts of vitamins and trace elements it contains cannot compete with those of a multivitamin preparation.
The antioxidants contained in spirulina, on the other hand, are quite remarkable in terms of type and quantity. The most intriguing of these antioxidants is the deep blue colored phycocyanin found in spirulina at a high concentration of 10-20%. The name "phycocyanin" comes from "phycos" (Greek for algae, seaweed) and "kyanos" (Greek for blue). Phycocyanin is a powerful antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties. Phycocyanin also appears to have immunomodulatory, liver and kidney protective properties.
Spirulina also contains various antioxidant natural carotenoids such as beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin as well as chlorophyll. Lutein and zeaxanthin are known to protect the eye from harmful blue light. Over time, blue light can trigger oxidative stress in the eye.
It is known that spirulina can reduce the absorption of toxic metals (aluminum, lead, cadmium, arsenic, etc.) that are always present in food in the gastrointestinal tract. These adsorptive properties of spirulina also appear to affect triglyceride metabolism.
Spirulina is a classic dietary supplement that many people take regularly to support their daily well-being.
3 g of spirulina are usually sufficient to benefit from the well-known positive properties of this alga.
