Japanese mint oil "Klosterfrau" is a traditional herbal medicine with the purified essential oil of field mint as an active ingredient.
Japanese mint oil “Klosterfrau” is used:
- Internally: for the symptomatic treatment of colds and digestive problems such as a feeling of fullness and flatulence
- Externally: for the supportive treatment of muscle or nerve pain, as well as mild tension-type headaches.
This medicinal product is a traditional herbal medicinal product that is only registered for the stated areas of application because it has been used for many years. This medicine is used in adults and adolescents from 12 years of age. If you do not feel better or worse after 7 days, contact your doctor
Contraindications
Japanese mint oil "Klosterfrau" must not be taken/applied
- if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to mint oil or menthol.
- in gallstone disease, blockage of the bile ducts, gallbladder inflammation and severe liver damage.
- Because of the menthol content, Japanese mint oil "Klosterfrau" must not be used by patients with bronchial asthma or other respiratory diseases that are associated with pronounced hypersensitivity of the respiratory tract. Inhaling Japanese mint oil "Klosterfrau" can lead to spasms of the bronchi.
- in children up to 2 years because of the menthol content. (Risk of reflex apnea (Kratschmer-Holmgren reflex) or asthma-like symptoms)
- in children under 12 years of age suffering from epilepsy.

pregnancy and breast feeding period
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking/using this medicine. In the absence of sufficient data, use during pregnancy and breast-feeding is not recommended.
application
Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
The recommended dose is:
Adults and young people over 12 years of age
- For use in colds: Put 1-2 drops in a glass of warm water once or twice a day and drink in small sips or put 1-2 drops on the back of your hand and absorb with your tongue or for inhalation 1-3 drops in a bowl hot water and breathe in the rising vapors for about 10 minutes.
- For use in digestive problems such as feeling of fullness and flatulence: Put 2 - 5 drops in a glass of warm water once or twice a day and drink in sips.
- For external use: Rub 3 – 5 drops into painful areas three times a day. Avoid eye contact.
Use in children under 12 years of age is not recommended due to a lack of data. Japanese mint oil "Klosterfrau" must not be used in children under 2 years of age and in children under 12 years of age suffering from epilepsy.
side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The frequency of the following side effects is not known: Inhalation of essential oils containing menthol may cause coughing, which quickly subsides after stopping inhalation.
After inhalation, asthma-like conditions can occur, even in adults. In these cases, a doctor must be informed immediately, who will then decide how to proceed.
Sensitive people may experience stomach discomfort after taking the drug.
When using Japanese mint oil “Klosterfrau” externally, burning and reddening of the skin can occur, which disappear after thorough rinsing with water.
Mint oil can also cause allergic skin reactions.
