Laxasan drops is a laxative that gently stimulates the natural emptying process in the large intestine through contact with the intestinal mucosa. Laxasan drops have no effect in the stomach and small intestine. The auxiliary substances (other ingredients) peppermint oil and fennel oil that have long been used in folk medicine also have flatulence-reducing properties.

Laxasan - drops are applied

  • short-term constipation
  • for complaints that require easier bowel emptying.

Contraindications

Laxasan must not be taken

  • if you are allergic to sodium picosulfate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
  • with intestinal obstruction, constrictions in the intestine;
  • in case of very painful and/or feverish acute abdominal complaints (e.g. appendicitis), possibly in connection with nausea and vomiting;
  • if you have a severe decrease in body fluids (“dehydration”);
  • in acute inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract;
  • by children under 4 years of age.

Please talk to your pharmacist before taking Laxasan. In the case of abdominal pain of unknown origin, nausea or vomiting, a doctor should be consulted prior to therapy in order to rule out other causes of the disease.

Although a habituation effect has not yet been observed, it should be noted that regular use of laxatives can lead to a reduction in the sensitivity of the intestinal mucosa, so that the laxative effect can only be achieved by increasing the dose. Long-term use should therefore be avoided.

Cases of dizziness and/or fainting have been reported after taking Laxasan. These incidents can be due to the consequences of constipation (increase in pressure when passing stool, pain) and are not necessarily caused by Laxasan.

Diarrhoea-like, watery stools can lead to abdominal pain and loss of fluids. This undesirable effect can be eliminated by reducing the dose.

When using Laxasan, you must always make sure that you drink enough water. Long-term daily intake of laxatives should be balanced by suitable dietary measures, such as B. high-fiber food should be avoided.

Long-term or high-dose use often leads to a loss of potassium and other minerals. This can lead to cardiac dysfunction, fatigue, fluid retention in the body (tendency to edema) and muscle weakness.

interactions

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using, have recently taken/used or might take/use any other medicines.

Certain heart medications (cardiac glycosides): Enhancement of the effect of cardiac glycosides in potassium deficiency.

Dehydrating agents and adrenal cortex hormones (glucocorticoids): increase in potassium loss.

Antibiotics: Reduction or loss of the laxative effect.

Taking Laxasan with food and drink

Please do not forget that the first thing you can do to improve or avoid constipation is through your diet (high-fiber meals with vegetables, salad, fruit or the addition of wheat bran, flaxseed, etc.), plenty of fluids and physical exercise.

pregnancy and breast feeding period

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking/using this medicine. Laxasan may only be taken during pregnancy, especially in the first three months, if prescribed by a doctor. There is no experience of using Laxasan in breastfeeding mothers. Due to the properties of the active substance, the use of Laxasan in breastfeeding women can be considered.

Ability to drive and use machines

No studies on the effects on the ability to drive and use machines have been performed. Dizziness and/or fainting can occur as a reaction, e.g. B. to cramps in the abdomen and the increase in pressure during defecation (see section "Warnings and precautions"). If such side effects occur, you should refrain from activities that require increased alertness (e.g. driving, operating machines).

application

Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

The recommended dose is:

  • Adults, adolescents and children over 10 years:
    14 - 28 drops (5 - 10 mg sodium picosulfate).
  • Children from 4 - 10 years:
    Only on prescription from a doctor (recommended are 7 - 14 drops, equivalent to 2.5 - 5 mg sodium picosulfate).

Children over the age of 4 and adolescents may only be given Laxasan drops on the doctor's instructions (see "Warnings and precautions"). Laxasan drops should not be given to children under the age of 4 (see "Do not take Laxasan").

Treatment should be started with the lowest dose given for each age group. If the stool is too hard or too soft after the first intake, you can reduce or increase the dosage by 2 - 3 drops each time you take the following doses until the optimal dose is found. In general, the maximum dose of 28 drops should not be exceeded.

Method of administration: For oral use.

If necessary, take Laxasan drops once a day, preferably in the evening.

To enable an undisturbed night's sleep, Laxasan should be taken shortly before going to bed, since the laxative effect occurs after an average of 6 - 10 hours.

duration of use

Avoid prolonged use. After a week, you must have your doctor check whether and, if so, for how long further application is necessary. For symptoms that require easier bowel movements, Laxasan drops may only be taken under medical supervision.

side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

If only taken for a short time at the recommended dosage, side effects are rare. The following side effects have been observed with different medicines that have the same active substance as Laxasan:

Very common (may affect more than 1 in 10 people): diarrhoea

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people): Abdominal discomfort, cramps and pain, flatulence

Uncommon (may affect up to 1 in 100 people): dizziness, vomiting, nausea

Not known (frequency cannot be estimated from the available data): Hypersensitivity reactions, fainting, skin reactions such as painful swelling of the skin and mucous membranes, especially in the facial area, which can also cause shortness of breath (angioedema), drug rash, skin rash and itching

The occurrence of dizziness and fainting after ingestion of sodium picosulfate appears to be associated with a reaction e.g. B. to match abdominal cramps and the increase in pressure during defecation (see section "Warning and precautions").

Long-term or high-dose intake of Laxasan drops often leads to increased loss of water, potassium and other salts. This can lead to disturbances in heart function and muscle weakness, especially if you are taking diuretics or anti-inflammatory drugs (corticosteroids) at the same time.
