Laxbene ratiopharm - suppositories are a laxative. When the active ingredient bisacodyl comes into contact with the mucous membrane of the colon, they stimulate your bowel movements. Laxbene ratiopharm suppositories have no effect in the stomach and small intestine if used correctly.

Laxbene ratiopharm - suppositories are used

  • to temporarily relieve intestinal sluggishness and constipation
  • to prepare for operations and examinations
  • for complaints that require easier defecation

If you don't feel better after a few days or even feel worse, contact your doctor.

Contraindications

Laxbene ratiopharm must not be used

  • if you are allergic to bisacodyl or any of the other ingredients of Laxbene ratiopharm suppositories listed in section 6
  • if you suffer from intestinal obstruction or problems with gastrointestinal permeability
  • if you suffer from acute inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract
  • if you have acute abdominal pain that requires surgery, such as acute appendicitis
  • if you suffer from chronic inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract with acute attacks (Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis)
  • if you have severe stomach pain along with nausea and vomiting - these may indicate a serious illness
  • If you have a severe loss of water in your body and, as a result, there is a disturbance in your electrolyte balance, 2 Laxbene ratiopharm suppositories must also not be used
  • in children under 10 years.

Interactions

If you use water tablets (diuretics) or medicines made from adrenal cortex hormones (adrenocorticosteroids) together with Laxbene ratiopharm suppositories, your body may experience an increased loss of potassium. Such a possible potassium deficiency can increase the effects and side effects of medicines used to treat heart failure (so-called cardiac glycosides) when used at the same time.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.

Laxbene ratiopharm suppositories - like all medicines - should be avoided during pregnancy and only used on a doctor's recommendation.
Clinical studies show that bisacodyl and its metabolites are not excreted in the breast milk of healthy breastfeeding women. Therefore, Laxbene can be used during breastfeeding.

Application

The recommended dose is

For short-term use for constipation

Adults, adolescents and children over 10 years: 1 suppository (10 mg) for immediate emptying

Laxbene ratiopharm suppositories are used once a day if necessary. Suppositories are usually effective within 20 minutes (between 10 and 30 minutes).

Laxbene ratiopharm suppositories are not suitable for children under 10 years because the recommended dosage of 5 mg bisacodyl for children aged 2 to 10 years is exceeded when using a suppository.

In preparation for operations and examinations
Complete bowel evacuation must always be carried out under medical supervision. The treating doctor determines the laxatives required on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the special circumstances.

To ensure complete bowel emptying, you should use both Laxbene ratiopharm film-coated tablets and Laxbene ratiopharm suppositories as directed by your doctor.

Adults, adolescents and children over 10 years of age: On the day before the examination, 2 Laxbene ratiopharm film-coated tablets (10 mg) in the morning and evening and on the morning of the examination 1 Laxbene ratiopharm suppository (10 mg)

Applications for diseases that require easier bowel emptying.
For diseases that require easier bowel emptying, the dosage is initially the same as for short-term use to treat constipation (1-2 Laxbene ratiopharm film-coated tablets). Your doctor will continually adjust the dosage to suit the specific needs of your condition.

Method of use
Take the suppositories out of their casing and insert them into the rectum with the pointed end first.

Duration of use
Longer use should be avoided. The need for continued use should be checked by a doctor after one week and the required duration of use should be determined in each individual case.

Side effects

In studies with bisacodyl, the active ingredient in Laxbene ratiopharm, the following side effects were observed:

Immune system diseases

  • Rare: hypersensitivity reactions, reactions that can be associated with failure of the cardiovascular system (anaphylactoid reactions), swelling of the skin and mucous membranes, which can also cause shortness of breath (angioedema)

Metabolic and nutritional disorders

Diseases of the nervous system

  • occasionally: dizziness
  • rarely: fainting

The occurrence of dizziness and fainting after the use of bisacodyl appears to be associated with a reaction such as: B. for cramps in the abdominal cavity and the increase in pressure when defecation (see section “Warnings and precautions”).

Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract

  • often: cramps and pain in the abdomen, diarrhea, nausea
  • occasionally: discomfort in the abdomen, vomiting, blood in the stool, discomfort in the rectum and anus
  • rare: inflammation of the colon

Diarrheic, watery stools can lead to loss of fluids, electrolytes and, above all, potassium, and can subsequently cause fatigue and muscle weakness.

General diseases and complaints at the administration site Very rare: pain and local irritation, especially in the case of tears in the skin of the anus (anal fissures) and inflammation of the rectum (ulcerative proctitis)
