Echinacea, rudbeckia, or purple coneflower is a well-known ornamental plant, but has long been used mainly as a medicinal plant. This perennial with nice red flowers is used whole for supporting purposes, but the root contains the most active substances. Echinacea is native to the prairies of North America and is one of the traditional plants used by the Indians.
The effects are demonstrated by a number of substances, such as sesquiterpene alcohols, essential oils, tannins and others. It is used in various forms, e.g. as tea, often also in the form of capsules, but the most effective is an alcohol-based solution. Coneflower supports natural immunity, has a beneficial effect on the upper respiratory tract and urinary tract.
