Unlike other amino acids, most of the BCAAs (L-leucine, L-isoleucine and L-valine) pass through the liver unchanged and metabolize primarily in the muscles. There it stops the breakdown of muscle proteins after exhaustion of carbohydrate sources (glycogen) during intensive training and exercise.
