Almost 500 new HIV infections are diagnosed in Austria every year. The virus can be treated today, with appropriate therapy, AIDS does not even break out. Life expectancy and quality of life are high - but only if the infection is detected early enough and treated properly.
HIV is mainly spread by infected people who do not know their status. It is therefore important to detect infections as early as possible in order to avoid possible further spread and to quickly initiate appropriate treatment for those affected.
The autotest VIH® is available in pharmacies without a prescription and can be carried out discreetly at home. It offers the possibility of early detection of the disease. The autotest VIH® ratiopharm only requires a drop of blood (about the amount that diabetics need to measure blood sugar). The HIV self-test is an antibody test and can therefore only rule out an HIV infection with certainty 12 weeks after the last risky contact. How long can it take for antibodies to form? If the test is performed too early, a negative result is meaningless. In the event of a positive result, the result of the self-test must be checked by a confirmation test in the laboratory.
