The brush is a stout two-year-old plant growing to a height of up to 2 m. It is found along roads, on pastures, weeds, ditches, ruins or on the edges of forests and shrubs. In addition to the northern part, it occurs throughout Europe, but also in the Caucasus, Asia Minor and Iran.

The usable part is the root , which is harvested in the autumn and is used internally. The inflorescence is purple, sometimes white, conical, prickly and up to 4 inches tall. The flower itself protects the prickly bracts that form a cage around it. It blooms from July to September, the wilted stems are very popularly used in flower arrangements and wreaths as an ornament.
