Takeda Riopan 1600 mg MagenGel
Takeda Riopan 1600 mg MagenGel
Riopan contains the active ingredient magaldrate and binds excess stomach acid. Too strong acid binding, which would lead to increased acid excretion in the stomach, is avoided. The natural digestive function is retained, and the bile acids that sometimes flow back into the stomach are bound. The effects of Riopan usually last for several hours.
Riopan is used for heartburn and acid reflux.
Children and adolescents under the age of 18 should only take Riopan on the advice of a doctor.
If you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 14 days, contact your doctor.
Contraindications
Riopan should not be taken
- if you are allergic to magaldrate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6),
- in pathological muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis),
- if you have low levels of phosphate in your blood (hypophosphataemia).
interactions
Because Riopan can affect the absorption of other medicines that are taken at the same time, you should generally leave at least 2 hours between taking Riopan and other medicines.
Only take Riopan after consulting a doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of the following medicines:
- certain antibiotics (medicines for infectious diseases, e.g. tetracyclines, quinolones such as ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, norfloxacin)
- Eisenpräparate
- isoniazid (a medicine for tuberculosis)
- Chlorpromazine (used against psychosis)
- certain tranquilizers (benzodiazepines)
- Digoxin (Herzmedikament)
- Bile acids (cheno- and ursodeoxycholic acid)
- certain pain relievers with indomethacin as the active ingredient
- cimetidine (another medicine used to neutralize stomach acid)
- coumarin derivatives (certain blood thinners)
- Salicylate
- Calcium carbonate when used as a medicine to treat high levels of phosphate in the blood (hyperphosphataemia) in dialysis patients
Taking Riopan with food and drink
Avoid taking acidic drinks (fruit juice, wine, etc.) at the same time as they increase the absorption of aluminum salts in the intestine. Effervescent tablets also contain fruit acids that can increase aluminum absorption.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Pregnancy:
It should only be used for a short time and in the lowest possible dose in order to avoid exposure of the child to aluminum.
Lactation:
Aluminum compounds pass into breast milk. A risk for the newborn cannot be assumed, since only very small amounts are absorbed.
application
The recommended dose is:
If you have mild stomach problems (e.g. heartburn, acid regurgitation), take 1 sachet (= 10 ml) as needed.
The symptoms usually appear after eating or at night (when lying down), so the usual dose is 1 sachet (= 10 ml) one hour after the main meal or before going to bed (= 4 times a day).
You should not take more than 4 sachets daily (equivalent to 6400 mg magaldrate).
In some cases, taking one dose can bring relief. Discontinue use when you are free of symptoms.
Riopan can be taken neat or with liquid.
Duration of treatment:
You can stop taking the drug when you are free of symptoms.
Riopan must not be taken for more than 14 days at a time. Contact your doctor if your symptoms do not go away within this period, last longer than 14 days, get worse, or develop additional symptoms. He will arrange for a diagnostic clarification to rule out other diseases.
Maximum daily dose:
You should not take more than 4 sachets per day (equivalent to 6400 mg of magaldrate).
Use in the case of kidney dysfunction:
In the case of severely restricted kidney function, long-term and higher-dose use should only be carried out under medical supervision with regular aluminum and magnesium blood level determinations due to the risk of chronic aluminum poisoning.
Use in children and adolescents:
There is insufficient information for children under 12 years of age, therefore they should not take Riopan. In adolescents from 12 to 18 years of age, Riopan should only be used if expressly prescribed by a doctor.
side effects
Gastrointestinal disorders:
Very common: pasty stools, frequent stools Rare: diarrhea (especially at high doses) Not known: abdominal pain
Skeletal muscle, connective tissue and bone diseases:
Years of use in high doses can lead to bone changes such as rickets (bone growth disorders, bone softening) due to the reduced absorption of calcium and phosphate.
Metabolism and nutritional disorders:
Patients with renal dysfunction, especially dialysis patients, may experience elevated blood levels of magnesium (hypermagnesemia) with side effects on the heart and brain. Accumulation of aluminum in the bones and central nervous system can lead to speech disorders, muscle twitching and memory impairment.
Furthermore, the phosphate content in the blood can be reduced.
