Carnitine is a quaternary ammonium compound and a derivative of the amino acids lysine and methionine. It has an important role in the transport of fatty acids to mitochondria.

L-carnitine is involved in the transfer of fatty acids from the cytosol to the mitochondria, where they are oxidized (beta-oxidation). Long chain fatty acids cannot cross the mitochondrial membrane by themselves. L-carnitine is synthesized in the liver from the amino acids lysine and methionine, and is particularly abundant in the muscles. Ascorbate - vitamin C is required for synthesis.
